Roca and Estancia La Paz
This property once belonged to Julio
Argentino Roca, who was twice president of Argentina from
1880 to 1886 and from 1898 to 1904. From 1870 and until the late 1930’s
Estancia La Paz was a privileged witness of the country’s
social and political life
Roca’s first presidential term initiated a period called “El
Orden Liberal”. Political life was predominantly led
by a group of intellectuals of the so-called “Generación
del ’80”, who introduced profound changes in
our country giving birth to a flourishing middle-class, which in those
times set Argentina apart from the rest of Latin America.
In those days President Roca, who loved to spend some time away from
the Capital city, adopted La Paz as his favourite refuge, not only
for his own relaxation but also as a meeting place where some of the
most important politicians of those days were summoned to discuss
state affairs. His only son, who later became Governor of the Province
of Córdoba and who was elected Vice-President from 1932 until
1938 also chose La Paz as his favourite place after
his father’s death in 1914. |
